A Church Where There Was No Church: New Gospel Opportunity in Nepal

When a family in an underserved area of Nepal came to faith in Christ, the easiest response might have been to connect them with an established church somewhere else. Instead, local believers saw a greater opportunity: help this family become the beginning of a new church in their own community. Today, their home has become a gathering place for worship, discipleship, and fellowship—creating a new local witness among hundreds of households where few follow Jesus.
Praying for an Open Door
For more than a year, members of a church in Nepal prayed faithfully for a nearby community with very few Christians.
They were not simply praying for individuals to attend their existing church. They were asking God to establish a new community of believers among people who had little access to the gospel.
At the time, one young man was the only known believer in his family. As local Christians continued praying and building relationships, they began gathering with his family to discover what Scripture said and how they could respond to it.
God began working within the household.
The young man’s father and mother, along with other members of the extended family, put their faith in Jesus Christ in 2025.
One household was beginning to change. But an even greater opportunity was emerging.
Why Not Start Here?
The parents faced ongoing health challenges that made traveling regularly to another church difficult.
Initially, that might have seemed like an obstacle. Instead, local believers began asking a different question:
“What if this family did not have to leave their community to experience church? What if a church began right here?”
The family gladly opened their home.
What began as a practical response to their circumstances soon became something much more significant: the beginning of a new local church.
Rather than drawing these new believers away from their community and into an established congregation elsewhere, they were encouraged to follow Jesus where God had already placed them.
That decision opened the door for their neighbors to encounter a church in their own community.
A New Church Among the Unreached
Today, approximately 15 believers gather each Sunday in the family’s home. They worship together, study God’s Word, fellowship, and grow as disciples.
Around them are approximately 300 households representing several ethnic communities. Only a small number of Christian families live in the area, and many people have had little opportunity to hear and respond to the message of Jesus.
This is what makes the location of the new church so significant.
If the family had simply traveled to an established church elsewhere, they could have grown in their own faith—and that would have been worth celebrating. But establishing a church within their own community creates an entirely different opportunity.
Now their neighbors have Christians living among them.
They have a place nearby where they can explore Scripture.
They have believers they already know who can walk alongside them.
And as new people follow Jesus, they do not necessarily need to leave their relationships and community behind. They can become disciples who share Christ with their own families, friends, and neighbors.
The church is not being removed from an unreached area. The church is taking root within it.
From One Household to Many
This is at the heart of Compel International’s commitment to church planting and disciple-making.
The goal is not simply to bring people from communities with little gospel presence into churches somewhere else. Alongside local believers and ministry partners, Compel seeks to equip disciples who can make disciples and see Christ-centered, multiplying churches established where they are most needed.
A home can become a gathering place. A gathering can become a church. And a local church can become a lasting gospel presence among families who previously had little opportunity to know Jesus.
The potential reaches far beyond the approximately 15 people currently gathering each Sunday.
There are hundreds of households around them.
Each represents relationships, extended families, and future opportunities for the gospel to move naturally from person to person and household to household. As believers discover God’s Word, obey what they are learning, and share it with others, discipleship can multiply through existing relationships.
A Light Planted in the Community
This new church is still young. Its story is only beginning.
Yet something important has already happened: a community where very few people follow Christ now has a local gathering of believers in its midst.
Rather than asking new believers to leave their community to find Christian fellowship elsewhere, local leaders helped them establish that fellowship where they already live.
That changes the possibilities for what comes next.
Today, about 15 believers gather. Tomorrow, their neighbors may join them. New households may open their doors. New disciples may emerge. And, by God’s grace, more churches may eventually take root in other communities where there is currently little or no gospel witness.
Jesus said:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden”
In this community in Nepal, that light now has a home—and from one household, it has the opportunity to spread to many more.
