Gospel Access
The Khmer have partial access to the gospel. The Bible is available in Central Khmer, and Christian radio broadcasts and some online resources exist. However, churches are sparse in rural areas, and many Khmer have never personally met a follower of Jesus. Evangelical believers make up just 1.6% of the population, with limited Christian presence outside urban centers. Social and religious pressures often hinder openness to the gospel, especially where Buddhism is tightly woven into cultural identity.

Who Are the Khmer?

With more than 16 million people, the Khmer make up over 96% of Cambodia’s population—yet less than 2% are followers of Christ. This Buddhist-majority group remains one of the largest unreached people groups in Southeast Asia.

A nation still healing

Decades after the fall of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia’s people still carry the scars of genocide, war, and trauma. For the Khmer, Buddhism blends with animistic traditions and ancestral worship, offering little hope of forgiveness or restoration. Generational brokenness and poverty persist, particularly in rural areas where access to education and healthcare remains limited.

Despite these challenges, God is stirring hearts. In hidden corners of the countryside and among the urban poor, Khmer families are encountering Jesus through loving relationships, Scripture in their own language, and the witness of local believers. Each small movement is a seed of transformation.

Prayer Points

God has not forgotten Cambodia—and neither can we. Pray with us for breakthrough among the Khmer:

  1. That God would raise up Khmer believers with courage, humility, and vision to lead a movement of multiplication.

  2. For protection and fruitfulness among disciple-makers working in rural and unreached provinces.

  3. That Khmer hearts would be softened to the gospel through healing, forgiveness, and tangible acts of love.

  4. For Cambodian churches to become sending churches—commissioning their own to reach neighboring villages and beyond.

Anchor Verse

“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” — Luke 10:2
