A Home Opened to Hope in India
Names, locations, and images have been changed to protect the identity of individuals in sensitive regions.
Through long-term partnerships with local believers, Compel International helps equip leaders to make disciples and strengthen communities among unreached people groups in India. What began as a simple invitation to a Bible discussion became a story of freedom, restoration, and multiplication for one Banjara family.
Struggling Beneath the Weight of Poverty
In a rural Banjara community in India, a man we will call Ramesh struggled under the weight of poverty, debt, and addiction. He and his wife, Anita, worked as agricultural laborers, doing everything they could to provide for their children and keep them in school. But seasonal work was unreliable, and many days the family barely had enough to eat.
As financial pressures increased, Ramesh turned more deeply to alcohol. His addiction strained the family and left them feeling trapped in an endless cycle of hardship.
Faithful Invitations from Local Believers
In the same community, a local pastor who had been trained and mentored through Compel International partnerships was faithfully leading Discovery Bible Studies among neighboring families. Week after week, he visited homes, prayed with people, and invited them to explore God’s Word together.
He often invited Ramesh to attend, but Ramesh refused again and again.
Then a neighbor named Sujatha began inviting him personally.
Every evening she encouraged him to come to the Bible discussion hosted in her home. At first, he resisted. Most nights he was already intoxicated and unwilling to attend. But Sujatha continued inviting him with patience and kindness.
Finally, one evening, Ramesh decided to go.
Encountering Hope Through God’s Word
That night, the group shared prayer requests, worshipped together, and prayed for one another. They read Mark 4:35–41, where Jesus calms the storm, and everyone participated in retelling and discussing the passage.
Something about the gathering deeply impacted him.
Week after week, Ramesh continued attending. As the group prayed for him and studied Scripture together, God began changing his heart and his habits. Over time, he was freed from alcoholism, and hope slowly returned to his family.
Soon, Ramesh began bringing Anita and their children with him each week. Together, they chose to follow Jesus and became active participants in the local fellowship.
As their faith grew, they also began seeing practical changes in their daily lives. God provided for their needs, helped them move beyond constant financial crisis, and restored peace within their home.
A Home Now Open to Others
Today, the same man who once avoided every invitation now opens his own house each Thursday for a Discovery Bible Study among neighbors and friends.
“I praise God for transforming my life. I am thankful for those who invited me patiently and helped me grow in the Lord. Now I am praying that God will help me reach another nearby community and begin a Bible study there so more people can become disciples of Jesus.”
Through faithful local believers equipped through Compel International partnerships, God continues to draw people to Himself among the Banjara communities of India. Stories like this reflect the power of persistent prayer, relational discipleship, and ordinary believers opening their homes so others can encounter Jesus.
