Faithful Perseverance Amidst Opposition in Kosovo

Compel International staff meeting with Pastor Bardhyl, his family and ministry team

Despite significant challenges, a local Compel International partner in Kosovo remains steadfast in bringing the gospel to four communities—Prizren, Dragash, Gjonaj, and Pirane. Through children’s ministries, family visits, acts of service, and evangelistic outreach, lives are being transformed, even as resistance grows.

A Challenging Spiritual Landscape

Most people don’t associate Europe with Islamic opposition to Christianity, but Kosovo is a unique case. While much of the continent has Christian roots, Kosovo has been deeply shaped by Islamic tradition for centuries, particularly under Ottoman rule. Today, approximately 95.6% of the population identifies as Muslim, while evangelical Christians make up only 0.2% (Joshua Project, State.gov). This makes Kosovo one of the least-reached nations in Europe. Though religious freedom is legally protected, Christians—especially evangelicals—often face opposition, discrimination, and social exclusion. Sharing the gospel here requires immense perseverance.

Compel International’s Partnership with Prizren Brethren Church

Compel International is actively partnering with Prizren Brethren Church, equipping their team for outreach among Muslim communities. Through training, funding, and guidance in community transformation, Compel International is helping the church create sustainable, community-based programs that open doors for evangelism. By investing in long-term, culturally sensitive initiatives, the partnership ensures that outreach is practical, transformative, and able to endure the challenges of ministering in Kosovo.

Radical Change Through Christ

One of the most remarkable stories from this past season is Renadi’s. Once a violent man who caused deep pain in his home, he encountered Christ through the ministry in Prizren. Over the past few months, his heart has changed, and his wife now testifies that he has become loving and kind to his family. The power of the gospel is evident—what once seemed impossible is now a reality.

Children’s ministry continues to flourish, led by young leader Blearti. At just 17, he now oversees children’s services across all four communities. Many parents have noticed a difference in their children’s attitudes, with some even calling to express gratitude. One mother shared, “I get upset because our children love you more than they love us,” highlighting how deeply the ministry has impacted their hearts.

Acts of love extended beyond the church walls during the Christmas season. The team distributed food to struggling families, shared 90 Christmas gifts with children, and hosted a special dinner for 20 people. In public outreach, they handed out 300 gospel-filled calendars, sparking conversations about Jesus—some received with joy, others with rejection.

Challenges and Resilience

Ministry in Kosovo is not without its struggles. In Gjonaj, opposition rose when a local leader convinced parents to stop their children from attending Bible lessons. Many children resisted the pressure and continued coming, but attendance dropped. In Dragash, a family that once welcomed the team later rejected them for being Christians. These moments are painful, but the team remains committed, trusting God to soften hearts over time.

Looking Ahead with Faith

Despite these obstacles, the work continues. Family visits, children’s services, and evangelistic outreach remain priorities. In March, the team will conduct a special International Women’s Day outreach, distributing flowers and gospel materials to women across all four communities.

Through every challenge, the team clings to God’s promises. As Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” The gospel is advancing in Kosovo, and with prayer, perseverance, and faith, lives will continue to be transformed.
