Hunted for Following Jesus: A Sudanese Family Pays the Cost of Following Christ

Across the Muslim world, many who choose to follow Jesus face rejection, isolation, and even threats from their own families. This story from Sudan is one example of the extraordinary courage God is raising up through His Church.
A Search for Truth
When Yasir first began studying the Qur'an, his goal was clear: he wanted to become an Islamic sheikh like several members of his family.
Raised in a deeply conservative Muslim home among the Beni Amer people of eastern Sudan, Yasir was committed to his faith. But as he devoted himself to studying Islam's sacred texts, difficult questions began to surface.
Some passages called Christians and Jews "People of the Book," worthy of honor and respect. Others called for fighting them. The apparent contradictions troubled him.
Even more unsettling were verses commanding believers to kill unbelievers. Yasir found himself asking:
“Who is this God who asks people to kill for Him? Does God really need human beings to defend Him? And who are these unbelievers?”
Determined to understand why Christians were spoken of so differently, he decided to read the Bible for himself.
What he discovered changed the course of his life.
Instead of hatred, he encountered the teachings of Jesus—love for enemies, forgiveness, mercy, and a God who willingly entered humanity's suffering to redeem it.
“The God I long to worship is the God whose love led Him to become flesh, to be crucified, and to die for me.”
Before long, Yasir placed his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized.
A Changed Life
Yasir was married with two young children, and his wife was expecting their third child.
When he first shared his decision to follow Christ, she was not persuaded.
"This is your decision," she told him, "but I believe only in Islam."
She avoided spiritual conversations and sometimes opposed his new faith. Yet over time, something undeniable began to emerge.
She saw a different husband.
His growing patience, humility, kindness, and sacrificial love spoke more loudly than arguments ever could. As she watched Christ transform his life, her own heart gradually softened. She became curious about Jesus and eventually placed her faith in Him as well.
Their family had found new life in Christ.
Soon, however, that new life came at an enormous cost.
When Faith Brings Persecution
After both families discovered their decision to follow Jesus, the situation quickly became dangerous.
Relatives forcibly separated Yasir from his wife and children in an attempt to end their marriage and pull the family back into Islam. But she repeatedly sought to return to her husband. Eventually, she escaped with their children, and together they fled to safety.
Today, both families have declared that Yasir and his entire household deserve to die because they have chosen to follow Christ.
They continue moving from place to place, remaining in hiding while searching for a secure place to rebuild their lives before the birth of their third child.
Sadly, stories like Yasir's are not uncommon.
Across many Muslim-majority regions where Compel's partners serve, new believers often face intense opposition from parents, siblings, spouses, or entire communities. Rejection, threats, loss of livelihood, and displacement are painful realities for many who choose to follow Jesus.
Walking alongside these believers is an important part of our ministry. Through trusted local partners, we help provide discipleship, pastoral care, practical assistance, and safe community so that new followers of Christ are not forced to walk this difficult road alone. While every situation is different, our prayer is that each new believer will remain firmly rooted in Christ and connected to His Church.
Standing with the Persecuted
Throughout this difficult season, one of Compel's trusted local ministry leaders, Bishop Musa, and the surrounding ministry team have faithfully cared for Yasir and his family.
They have helped them find temporary shelter, provided ongoing pastoral support, and are working to identify a secure location where the family can begin rebuilding their lives in safety.
Their ministry reflects the heart of the global Church—walking with brothers and sisters who have counted the cost of following Jesus and reminding them they are not alone.
Hope That Cannot Be Taken Away
Although uncertainty remains, Yasir and his wife continue to trust the Lord.
They know the cost of following Christ is great.
But they also know He is worthy.
Their story reminds us that the Gospel continues to transform lives in places where following Jesus requires tremendous courage. God is drawing people to Himself, building His Church through faithful local believers, and sustaining those who face persecution because of their faith.
As they continue this difficult journey, they cling to the promise of Psalm 27:1 (NIV):
“The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”
