A Torn Page That Changed a Life

Names, locations, and images have been changed to protect the identity of individuals in sensitive regions.

God is at work in some of the hardest places in the world, drawing people to Himself and sustaining those who follow Him at great cost. Through long-term partnership, Compel International walks alongside local believers like “Youssef,” equipping and encouraging them as they faithfully make disciples in the face of real and ongoing persecution.

Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him…
— Psalm 91:14–16 (NIV)

A Question Carried on the Wind

It was not a sermon, a church gathering, or even a conversation that first led Youssef to God.

It was a torn piece of paper.

Youssef, a North African man from a Muslim background, is a husband and father of five. Thoughtful and well-educated, he has always loved books. For years, he ran a small bookstore in a busy train station—an opportunity that also brought constant pressure.

Because of the shop’s prime location, others tried to take it from him. Some made offers. Others made threats.

One day, a powerful official delivered a final warning: sell the bookstore—or lose it.

Shaken and overwhelmed, Youssef sat in despair. That was when a small piece of paper drifted through the air and landed at his feet. Something compelled him to pick it up.

It contained a passage from Psalm 91.

As he read, a question took hold of his heart:

Who is this God?

A Relentless Search for Truth

That question marked the beginning of a quiet but determined journey.

Finding a Bible was not easy, but Youssef persisted. For months, he searched, listened to Christian radio broadcasts, and sought to understand more about the God revealed in that torn page.

At the same time, something unexpected happened.

The official who had threatened him suddenly disappeared from the situation. Later, Youssef learned he had been transferred to another city.

The pressure was gone.

What began as fear had become an unmistakable encounter with God.

Youssef gave his life to Jesus.

A Light in a Difficult Place

From that point forward, his bookstore became more than a business. It became a place where truth quietly spread.

Youssef began sharing Scripture and making Bibles available to others—often discreetly, always at personal risk.

His faith did not go unnoticed.

He became known in his community simply as “the Christian,” a label often spoken with rejection and hostility. Pressure increased against him and his family, yet he remained steady.

What began as a moment of despair had become a divine encounter.

Loss, Resistance, and Perseverance

Years later, another challenge came. The train station relocated, and shop owners were compensated with new spaces—everyone except Youssef.

Undeterred, he started again, this time in a small wooden kiosk.

Recently, he joined a Compel International training alongside other local leaders. There, he was further equipped to help others follow Jesus and grow in small, multiplying groups. His vision was clear: to see many come to know Christ and become disciples who make disciples.

But only days after returning home, tragedy struck again.

His kiosk—and all the books inside—was burned to the ground.

Although the perpetrator was identified, authorities released him, claiming mental instability—a familiar explanation in situations where believers are targeted.

Standing Firm in Faith

Despite the loss, the risks, and the ongoing pressure, Youssef remains steadfast.

He continues to trust in God’s protection and calling. He continues to look for ways to share the Word. And he continues to stand as a witness in a place where following Jesus comes at a high cost.

Compel International remains committed to walking alongside leaders like Youssef—providing training, encouragement, and long-term partnership as they faithfully live out the Gospel in their communities.

A Call to Prayer

We invite you to stand with Youssef and others like him:

  • Pray for protection over him, his wife, and their children

  • Pray for strength and courage as he continues to follow Jesus

  • Pray for provision as he seeks to rebuild once again

  • Pray that God’s Word will continue to spread through his life and witness

Youssef’s story is a powerful reminder: God’s Word is alive and active, able to reach the human heart—even through a torn piece of paper.

And what God begins, He is faithful to complete.
