Small Acts of Love Bring New Hope to a Community in India

Children who once missed school are beginning to attend. Parents are learning practical ways to care for their families. And in a home within a Yanadi community in India, people are gathering around Scripture—with the prayer that this small beginning will one day grow into a church.
Behind these changes is a local congregation learning to put God’s Word into practice among its neighbors. Through a training partnership with Compel International, the church is developing its vision for making disciples and equipping believers to lead small Scripture groups.
Their work among these families offers a picture of something we believe deeply: the Church where it exists can help plant the Church where it does not yet exist. Often, that begins with believers recognizing the people God has already placed nearby.
Seeing Their Neighbors
Approximately 30 Yanadi families live near this church. Many depend on fishing for their livelihood, traveling in search of work while trying to meet their families’ daily needs.
That uncertainty affects the children as well. Some accompany their parents when they leave to work. Others remain at home, and many have been missing the opportunity to attend school and learn to read.
The congregation’s pastor began challenging the church to consider God’s care for people in need and what it would mean to show that same love to their neighbors. As believers met in Discovery Bible Study groups, they returned to the responsibility of caring for others.
Those conversations led them into the community.
Church members visited the families and began seeing ways they could help. Sunday school teachers started gathering children to teach them basic reading skills. A volunteer gave time to support their learning. Parents received encouragement about their children’s education, along with practical teaching on health and hygiene.
The response grew from what these local believers could offer: their time, their skills, and a willingness to become involved in their neighbors’ lives.
When Scripture Leads to Action
This connection between reading Scripture and responding to it is central to the disciple-making approach Compel encourages.
In a Discovery Bible Study, people read a passage together, discuss what it reveals about God and people, and consider how they should respond. They also think about whom they can share what they are learning with. Over time, participants learn to engage with God’s Word themselves and help others do the same.
In this church, studying Scripture brought the needs of nearby families into sharper focus. Believers began putting what they were learning into practice through visits, teaching, and practical care.
Gradually, changes became visible. Children began learning the alphabet. Those who had been missing school started enrolling in a nearby government school, where they could receive an education and a midday meal. The ministry also reported improvements in children’s health and hygiene.
Each of these changes matters. Learning to read creates opportunities for a child’s future. Healthier habits affect everyday family life. And the relationships developing through these acts of care created opportunities for parents to begin exploring Scripture themselves.
An Open Home and a New Gathering
One family opened its home as a meeting place, and a Discovery Bible Study began among the parents.
The same approach that had helped the church consider its responsibility to its neighbors was now being shared within the community. Parents gathered to learn from God’s Word and consider what it meant for their own lives.
The local team reported gradual changes in family habits, including reduced alcohol use and greater attention to personal hygiene and the cleanliness of their surroundings.
This is part of what we mean by wholistic ministry. We care about people’s relationship with Christ and about the daily circumstances of their lives. As families encounter Scripture, they have opportunities to consider how its truth speaks to their relationships, responsibilities, and care for one another.
Here, that process is still unfolding. A home has opened. A group is meeting. Parents are learning, and children are gaining opportunities they were missing.

Compel’s relationship with this church centers on training. We walk alongside local believers as they develop a vision for reaching their own communities and learn practical ways to make disciples.
Within the church’s wider ministry, leaders are being prepared to facilitate Discovery Bible Studies, and pastors are being encouraged to reach people groups with little access to the Gospel. The work among these Yanadi families sits within that wider commitment to equipping believers and beginning new groups.
The local church carries those relationships forward. Its pastor encourages the congregation. Its teachers spend time with the children. Its volunteers visit families. And a household within the community provides a place for people to gather.
This is why we invest in local believers. They can keep returning, develop trust, and walk with families as questions arise and faith grows. Training becomes meaningful as they apply it in the places where they live and serve.
The Hope for a Church Within the Community
The believers serving these families are praying that the Bible study will eventually become a church.
That hope gives direction to the work as the group gathers and people learn from Scripture. A church within this community would give families a place to worship, grow in faith, care for one another, and share Christ through their own relationships. As new believers mature, they could help relatives and neighbors discover the same hope.
For now, the next steps are close to home: keep visiting, keep teaching, keep opening Scripture, and keep helping people respond to what they discover.
Small acts of love have already made a difference. Children are attending school. Parents are gathering around God’s Word. And a local church is learning how to carry the Gospel into the life of a neighboring community.
