They Saw What Was Possible: A Community of Faith Takes Shape in Albania

Community committee members in Sektor Seman, Albania, working together to shape their community’s future.

In June 2023, I first visited Sektor Seman in Albania. The work was just beginning.

We gathered with the people helping lead the community effort: parents, older residents, and people of different ages and backgrounds. Many worked in agriculture or basic services. Others served through the school or carried responsibilities elsewhere in the community.

These are small, predominantly Roma communities. Roma families are among Albania’s poorest and most marginalized, often facing barriers to education, regular employment, and basic services. The changes these residents were hoping for would affect the everyday circumstances of their families.

They had seen what had happened in a neighboring community where our local partner had been engaged for years. Health and hygiene had improved. Families had developed small businesses and new opportunities for income. School participation had grown substantially.

The people in Sektor Seman wanted to know whether they could do something similar.

I remember how heartwarming that was. The desire had come from the community itself. They had seen what was possible nearby and wanted to work together toward change where they lived.

A September 2026 update brought encouraging news: nearly all the members of Sektor Seman’s community committee have become followers of Christ. And the local gathering is considering recognizing itself as a church.

Having visited during those early days, I find that especially meaningful.

Change That Neighbors Could See

My relationship with our local partner in Albania began through my earlier ministry work. Over the years, I have had opportunities to see how patient, locally led ministry can change daily life.

In the community that helped inspire Sektor Seman, the early work addressed very basic needs.

Many men earned a living for their families by collecting discarded materials and sorting bottles and other recyclables. Sewage ran into the streets from people’s homes. Roads needed improvement. Families faced challenges affecting their health, their children’s education, and their ability to provide for themselves.

Residents began working together to address those needs, with local believers walking alongside them.

Over the years, the changes accumulated. Health and hygiene improved. Practical training helped families develop new ways to earn a living. More children participated in school.

An after-school program became an important gathering place for the community. That same center also became home to the church.

The work touched families, education, livelihoods, and spiritual life. It involved the community over many years.

And people in Sektor Seman noticed.

A Community Choosing to Begin

What encouraged me during our meeting was the range of people involved. These were residents with families, work, and responsibilities of their own, considering what they could do for the place where they lived.

Our local partner helped connect that willingness with support from a nearby church they had trained. Believers from that church began walking alongside Sektor Seman as residents learned to identify needs, involve their neighbors, and take practical steps together.

The community that had inspired them provided an example. The trained local church and our partner provided continuing support. The people of Sektor Seman carried the effort forward themselves.

That matters. Lasting change needs people who understand their community, care about its future, and are willing to take responsibility for it.

The People Serving Are Coming to Faith

The September report that nearly all the committee members are now believers is a significant development.

The committee brings local people together to consider community needs and organize a response. Now, the people helping shape the community’s future are themselves being changed by the gospel.

Bible studies, home visits, and continued encouragement have accompanied the practical work. Local believers have kept returning, serving, and opening Scripture with people.

As committee members come to know Christ, they have opportunities to connect their growing faith with the relationships and responsibilities they already carry. They know the families around them. They understand the challenges. And increasingly, they are learning to serve their neighbors as followers of Jesus.

A Church Taking Shape from Within

Our local partner described the gathering in Sektor Seman as moving toward becoming a church. They are waiting for the group and its leaders to make that decision. At the time of the September report, it had not yet been made.

That local ownership matters here too.

Our hope is to see believers grow into a church rooted in their own community—people who worship Christ together, learn from His Word, care for one another, and carry the gospel through their relationships.

Compel walks alongside local partners as they equip believers for that work. Those believers continue the relationships long after a visit or training has ended.

What Another Community May See

I think back to that first visit with gratitude.

The people of Sektor Seman had seen years of change in a neighboring community. They wanted to learn, and they made a concerted effort to work with the local believers who came alongside them.

Today, nearly all their committee members have come to faith, and a gathering is considering its next step as a church.

We could see beginnings in June 2023. Now we are hearing how God has continued working through the people who stayed, served, taught, and prayed.

And I wonder what another community may eventually see in Sektor Seman.

We pray that the hope taking root here will continue to spread.
